Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate ultrasonographic findings of absorbable mesh implants for tissue defect after breast partial resection.

Materials and Methods: We retrospectively compared ultrasonographic findings of 26 absorbable meshes with those of 30 control patients with the usual post operative changes of breast partial resection. Ultrasonographic findings were assessed according to the change of the volume during the follow-up of mean 30 months and pattern of the lesion.

Results: Ultrasonograms revealed a well-defined cyst with (pattern 1, n = 9) or without (pattern 2, n = 7) hyperechoic mass, a hyperechoic mass with (pattern 3, n = 6) or without cystic portion (pattern 4, n = 1), ill-defined hypoechoic lesion with (pattern 5, n = 2) or without mass effect (pattern 6, n = 1). The volume of the lesion decreased gradually (mean 77%). Most control group showed pattern 6(n = 22). Only 1 case showed pattern 4 on ultrasonography. Remaining 3 and 4 cases showed pattern 2 and 5, respectively.

Conclusion: Absorbable mesh implantation after breast partial resection is differentiated from usual postoperative change on ultrasonography. However, absorbable mesh is less valuable as a volume expander as the volume of the lesion gradually decreased in follow-up examinations.
